Calculator Tools
Calculate two fractions or mixed numbers with exact integer arithmetic. See the simplified fraction, mixed-number and decimal forms plus common-denominator, multiplication or reciprocal steps.
Use integers, fractions such as 3/4, or mixed numbers such as 1 1/2. Each integer part is limited to 256 digits.
Simple workflow
How to use Fraction Calculator
- 1Enter two integers, fractions or mixed numbers and choose an operation.
- 2Select Calculate fractions.
- 3Review the reduced exact result, mixed-number and decimal forms, and the calculation steps.

Frequently asked questions
Can I enter mixed numbers?
Yes. Use a space between the whole number and fraction, such as 1 1/2. The fractional part must be proper.
Are fraction calculations exact?
Yes. Numerators and denominators use BigInt arithmetic, then the result is reduced with the greatest common divisor. The decimal display can be rounded.
How are fractions added or subtracted?
The calculator finds the least common denominator, rewrites both numerators for that denominator, applies the operation, then reduces the result.
What inputs are not allowed?
A denominator cannot be zero, and division by a fraction with a zero numerator is rejected. Each integer part is limited to 256 digits.
Practical guide
Calculate fractions with exact arithmetic and visible steps
Add, subtract, multiply or divide two integers, fractions or mixed numbers. UtilSprout converts mixed numbers to improper fractions, performs integer numerator-and-denominator arithmetic, and reduces the final result with the greatest common divisor.
Addition and subtraction use the least common denominator. Multiplication combines numerators and denominators. Division multiplies by the reciprocal of the second fraction.
Worked example
Add one half and one third
- Start with
- 1/2 + 1/3.
- Choose
- Choose Addition and calculate.
- You get
- LCM denominator 6 gives 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
Tips for a useful result
- Enter a mixed number with a space, such as 1 1/2.
- A zero numerator is valid, but a denominator can never be zero.
- The exact fraction is authoritative; a repeating decimal is rounded for display.
Limits, signs and privacy
Each integer part is limited to 256 digits. Negative signs are supported, denominators are normalized to positive values, and final fractions are always reduced.
Mixed-number fractional parts must be proper, so use 2 1/3 rather than 1 4/3. Dividing by a fraction whose numerator is zero is rejected.
