Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between GB and GiB?
In Digital storage, decimal units use powers of 1,000 and binary units use powers of 1,024. One GB is 1,000 MB, while one GiB is 1,024 MiB. Converting one GiB to GB returns 1.073741824 GB. Choose the exact label used by your source.
Are US gallons and Imperial gallons interchangeable?
No. One US gallon converts to 3.785411784 litres, while one Imperial gallon converts to 4.54609 litres. Volume also offers US cups and US fluid ounces; check which measurement system your recipe or specification uses.
Can I convert cups of an ingredient to grams?
No. Cups measure volume and grams measure mass; converting between them requires the ingredient's density. This tool converts within a single category and does not accept density or ingredient inputs.
Can I convert months or years into seconds?
The Time category supports milliseconds, seconds, minutes, hours, days and weeks. It treats a day as 24 hours and a week as seven days. Months and calendar years vary in length and are not offered; use Date Difference Calculator for a specific date range.
Are negative temperatures supported?
Yes, provided the temperature is not below absolute zero: −273.15 °C, −459.67 °F or 0 K. A value below that limit produces an error instead of a converted result.
Practical guide
Convert once, compare every unit
Choose a Category, enter Value and select the From and To units. Select Convert to see the main converted value. The All equivalent values table then compares the same value and source unit with every unit supported in that category, so you do not need to repeat the conversion for each destination.
Both units belong to the same category. Most categories multiply by the source unit's factor and divide by the destination unit's factor. Temperature uses its established scale formulas instead: 0 °C becomes 32 °F and 273.15 K. Decimal storage units such as GB and binary units such as GiB remain separate. Values display up to ten decimal places, so small rounding differences can appear when converting a displayed result back.
Worked example
Convert one metre and compare every length unit
- Start with
- Choose Length and enter 1 in Value.
- Choose
- Choose Metres (m) in From and Feet (ft) in To, then select Convert.
- You get
- The main result is 3.280839895 ft. The table also shows 100 cm, 0.001 km, 39.3700787402 in and every other supported length equivalent from the same one-metre input. Copy result still copies the selected metre-to-feet conversion.
Tips for a useful result
- Read the full unit label. US gallons and Imperial gallons are different volumes; decimal GB and binary GiB are different storage units.
- Changing Value, From or To clears the previous result. Select Convert to get the updated result. Changing Category also clears the result and selects that category's first two units.
- Swap units exchanges From and To and clears the result, but keeps Value. To convert a previous result back, enter that result as Value before selecting Convert.
- Reset returns Value to 1 and clears the result. It keeps your selected category and units.
