Frequently asked questions

Will Title Case preserve acronyms and proper nouns?

Not automatically. This tool lowercases the input before applying its boundary rule, so names such as iPhone and acronyms such as NASA need a manual review.

Where is case conversion performed?

The selected rule runs on the text in your browser, and the editable result remains in the current tab. UtilSprout does not upload the source or converted text.

Practical guide

Apply predictable writing and identifier case rules

Case Converter applies a defined mechanical rule to the text you provide. Uppercase and lowercase change cased letters. Title Case and Sentence case first lowercase the input and then capitalize letters at specific boundaries. The identifier modes split text into words and join those words again.

Mechanical casing cannot infer names, brand spellings, abbreviations or a publication's editorial style. Review proper nouns such as iPhone and acronyms such as NASA after conversion. Language-sensitive rules can also differ from the browser's locale-aware upper- and lowercase mappings.

Worked example

Compare a heading with a code identifier

Start with
Enter API response status.
Choose
Choose Title Case, then compare the source again with camelCase.
You get
Title Case returns Api Response Status, so the acronym needs a manual review. camelCase returns apiResponseStatus, which is suitable when that is the naming convention used by the codebase.

Tips for a useful result

  • Title Case here is a boundary rule, not a language-specific publishing style: it does not keep short words such as and or of lowercase.
  • camelCase, snake_case and kebab-case treat punctuation as a word separator and do not preserve that punctuation in the identifier.
  • The conversion runs on the current input in your browser. Review the editable result before copying when capitalization carries meaning.

How each writing-case rule behaves

The four writing modes do not attempt grammar analysis. Their exact rules make the output repeatable, but context still requires a human review.

ModeRule used by this tool
lowercaseConverts every cased letter to its locale-aware lowercase form; punctuation and spacing remain in place.
UPPERCASEConverts every cased letter to its locale-aware uppercase form; punctuation and spacing remain in place.
Title CaseLowercases the whole input, then capitalizes a letter at the start or after whitespace, a hyphen or a dash. It does not apply headline-style small-word exceptions.
Sentence caseLowercases the whole input, then capitalizes the first letter and letters after a period, exclamation mark or question mark followed by whitespace. It cannot distinguish an abbreviation from a sentence ending.

Identifier modes

camelCase, snake_case and kebab-case split on punctuation and spacing, and also split a lowercase letter or digit followed by an uppercase letter. They lowercase the resulting words, then join them as privateBrowserTools, private_browser_tools or private-browser-tools. Existing acronym boundaries are not always recoverable, so compare the result with the naming convention of the target language or project.
