Practical guide
Measure a draft while you write
Word Counter updates as you type and reports words, Unicode characters, characters excluding spaces, sentences, paragraphs, estimated reading and speaking time, average word length, the longest word and frequent terms. Hyphenated and apostrophe-linked terms are treated as one word.
Time estimates use about 200 words per minute for reading and 130 words per minute for speaking. Actual pace depends on the audience, material and pauses, so treat both as planning estimates.

Tips for a useful result
- Sentence counting uses visible sentence-ending punctuation, so headings and fragments may not count as sentences.
- Paragraphs are separated by blank lines. A single line break inside a paragraph does not start another paragraph.
- The text never leaves this browser tab and is not included in analytics or server logs.
