Frequently asked questions

How does Lock aspect ratio affect width and height?

With the lock enabled, editing one dimension updates the other using the original image's proportions, rounded to whole pixels. Turn it off to enter width and height independently. A different proportion stretches the whole image rather than cropping it.

What does Scale (%) use as its starting size?

Scale (%) always uses the original width and height, even when Lock aspect ratio is off. Entering 50 halves both source dimensions, rounded to whole pixels. It replaces manually entered dimensions rather than scaling those previous values.

Will enlarging an image recover missing detail?

No. A larger output has more pixels, but resizing cannot recover detail that was absent from the source. Enlarged photos or text may look soft. Review the result at the size you intend to use.

Which output format should I use for a transparent image?

Choose PNG, or WebP when supported by your browser, to retain transparent areas. JPG fills those areas with white. Quality applies to JPG and WebP; it is disabled for PNG. The selected dimensions apply whichever format you choose.

Practical guide

Set dimensions that match the destination

Image Resizer changes a JPG, PNG or WebP to a chosen width and height. Keep Lock aspect ratio selected when the image should retain its shape: changing one dimension then calculates the other from the source proportions. Scale changes both dimensions by the same percentage of the original.

Use exact pixel dimensions when a page or form specifies an image size. If the required shape differs from the source, crop to that shape first. Unlocking the ratio lets you enter independent dimensions, but it stretches or compresses the image to fit them.

Worked example

Make a photo half as wide and tall

Start with
garden.jpg is 1600 ร— 1200 pixels.
Choose
Set Scale to 50%, choose JPG at 85% quality and select Resize image.
You get
utilsprout-800x600.jpg measures 800 ร— 600 pixels and keeps the original 4:3 proportions.

Tips for a useful result

  • Check Width and Height after entering a percentage; calculated dimensions are rounded to whole pixels.
  • Enlarging creates more pixels but does not recover detail that is absent from the source.
  • Choose PNG or WebP for transparent artwork. JPG output uses a white background for transparent areas.
