Frequently asked questions

What replaces transparent areas in the PNG?

JPG does not support transparency. Transparent and partly transparent pixels are placed over the selected Transparency background, which defaults to white. Choose the colour before converting and check the edges in the result.

How should I choose JPG Quality for a PNG graphic?

Start with the default quality, convert, and inspect text, edges and colour transitions in Result. Lower quality can reduce size but may soften details or introduce compression marks. Run Convert to JPG again after changing Quality.

Will the JPG always be smaller than my PNG?

No. The size depends on the image content, quality setting and browser encoder. Simple PNG graphics may already be compact. Compare Output size and Size change before deciding which version to keep.

When should I keep the original PNG instead?

Keep PNG when you need transparency or want to avoid lossy compression around text and sharp graphic edges. JPG is useful when the destination requires it and a solid background is suitable. Converting does not alter your original file.

Practical guide

Choose the background before removing transparency

PNG to JPG creates a JPG at the source image's pixel dimensions. It is useful for a photo saved as PNG or a destination that accepts JPG files. The quality slider controls JPG encoding; compare the actual output size and visible detail before choosing a setting.

JPG cannot store transparency. Choose a Transparency background colour to fill transparent areas and blend partly transparent edges against that colour. Match it to the intended page or document background to make the result look natural when placed there.

Worked example

Place a product cutout on white

Start with
product.png is 1000 ร— 1000 pixels with transparency around the product.
Choose
Set Quality to 90%, leave Transparency background white and select Convert to JPG.
You get
utilsprout-converted.jpg measures 1000 ร— 1000 pixels. The area around the product becomes white, and the image no longer has transparency.

Tips for a useful result

  • Inspect the product edges in the result, especially where shadows or soft transparent pixels meet the new background.
  • Keep PNG or use WebP when the image must remain transparent on different backgrounds.
  • After changing quality or the background colour, select Convert to JPG again before downloading.
