Volume Calculator

Calculate the volume of a cube, rectangular prism, cylinder, sphere, cone or square pyramid. Choose dimension and result units, see the formula, and convert correctly between cubic metric and imperial units or litres.

Formula

V = a³

Zero dimensions produce zero volume. Negative dimensions are rejected. Linear dimensions are converted before the cubic-volume calculation.

Simple workflow

How to use Volume Calculator

  1. 1Choose a 3D Shape, Dimension unit and Result unit.
  2. 2Enter every labelled dimension and review the displayed formula.
  3. 3Select Calculate volume to see the substituted dimensions and converted cubic result.

Frequently asked questions

Why are volume conversion factors cubed?

Volume has three dimensions. Because one metre is 100 centimetres, one cubic metre is 100 × 100 × 100, or 1,000,000 cubic centimetres.

Which shapes are supported?

This version supports a cube, rectangular prism, cylinder, sphere, cone and square pyramid. It does not combine shapes or calculate irregular containers.

Can I show the result in litres?

Yes. One litre is 1,000 cubic centimetres, or 0.001 cubic metres. Litres are available as a result unit.

What happens when a dimension is zero?

A zero dimension produces zero volume. Negative dimensions and nonnumeric or missing required values are rejected.

Practical guide

Calculate a shape first, then convert its cubic volume

Choose a supported three-dimensional shape and enter its required dimensions. The calculator converts each linear dimension to metres, applies the selected formula, then converts the cubic-metre result to the chosen output unit.

Cubic conversions apply the linear scale three times. One metre is 100 centimetres, so one cubic metre is 100³, or 1,000,000 cubic centimetres. One litre equals 1,000 cubic centimetres.

Worked example

Find the volume of a one-metre cube

Start with
Cube with side 1 metre.
Choose
Choose cubic centimetres as the result unit.
You get
V = a³ gives 1 m³, which converts to 1,000,000 cm³.

Tips for a useful result

  • Use the same dimension unit for every field in one calculation.
  • A zero dimension produces zero volume; negative dimensions are rejected.
  • For a direct measurement conversion without a shape formula, use Unit Converter.

Formulas, precision and privacy

The supported formulas are a³ for a cube, l × w × h for a rectangular prism, πr²h for a cylinder, 4/3 × πr³ for a sphere, 1/3 × πr²h for a cone and 1/3 × a²h for a square pyramid.

Results involving π are rounded to useful display precision. This tool handles ideal geometric shapes and does not account for wall thickness, irregular surfaces or measurement uncertainty.

Dimensions and results stay in this browser and are not stored or transmitted.
