Frequently asked questions
What counts as a changed line?
A nearby removed and added line is paired as a changed line. Word-level highlights inside that row show the content removed and added.
What does Ignore whitespace do?
It treats repeated whitespace as a single space and ignores leading or trailing whitespace for comparison. The displayed text is not rewritten.
Can I compare very large files?
Each side is limited to 1 MB and 2,000 lines so the line-difference algorithm stays responsive on common phones and laptops.
Are the compared texts uploaded?
No. Both inputs and the generated differences remain in the current browser tab.
Practical guide
Review line and word changes side by side
Text Compare aligns unchanged lines and displays additions, removals and paired changed lines in two columns. Within a changed line, word-level highlights show the exact content removed from the original and added to the new version.
Ignore whitespace treats runs of spaces as equivalent, while Ignore capitalization compares letters without case differences. The displayed text remains original, so ignored differences are not silently rewritten.
Worked example
Compare two versions of a paragraph
- Start with
- Paste the earlier draft on the left and the revised draft on the right.
- Choose
- Enable Ignore whitespace if wrapping or spacing changed, then select Compare text.
- You get
- The summary counts added, removed and changed lines. The side-by-side view highlights the words that differ within each paired changed line.
Tips for a useful result
- Use Swap texts when the new version was pasted on the wrong side.
- Each side is limited to 1 MB and 2,000 lines to keep comparison responsive on mobile devices.
- Both texts and the generated diff stay in the current tab and are never uploaded.
